WHO presents program ➡ International Nonproprietary Names (INN).
Currently, the market has several tens of thousands of pharmaceutical substances, and often there is confusion with their names. WHO proposes to establish a unified system of names for pharmaceutical substances.
✔ Previously, a pharmaceutical substance could be named in different ways: by its brand name, for example, “aspirin” or chemical name – acetylsalicylic acid. The trademark could be used for the name of a pharmaceutical substance containing more than one active substance. This variety of names of medicines can bring not only to the misunderstandings among pharmacists, but also to health problems of ordinary people.
✔ The International Nomenclature for International Nonproprietary Names (INN) will provide a common language and understanding for applicants, doctors, pharmacists and people who work with pharmaceutical substances around the world.
✔ Now it is possible to check the information on the INN status of a particular pharmaceutical substances online via the link MedNet.
✔ For applicants, students, pharmacists and medical professionals, WHO has founded the virtual School of INN (SoINN), which should help to navigate the systematic names of the INN in different classes of pharmacology.
