Millennia-old traditions of Córdoba’s artisans are now protected across all of Europe. The jewellery art of the Spanish city of Córdoba (Joyería de Córdoba) has become the first Spanish craft brand in the world to receive an official European Geographical Indication (GI). This means that from now on, across all 27 EU member states, the name “Joyería de Córdoba” can be used exclusively by local artisans who strictly adhere to traditional technology.
What is this protection system?
Previously, similar European Geographical Indications were issued primarily for food and beverage products (such as Parmesan cheese or Champagne). However, in late 2025, the European Union launched a new protection system managed by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which extends to craft and industrial goods.
The new status provides Córdoba’s jewellers with a powerful legal tool:
-
Blocking Counterfeits: Strict protection against imitations, counterfeits, and unfair use of the name—both in brick-and-mortar stores and on global online marketplaces.
-
Guarantee of Authenticity: All stages of production—from design development to packaging—must take place exclusively within the municipality of Córdoba.
-
High Standard: Under this brand, rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings made of gold, silver, or platinum with the addition of pearls, gemstones, or enamel will be produced. It specifically protects the unique local technique that achieves an optimal balance between the weight and volume of the jewellery piece.
Córdoba — A Jewellery Capital with a Millennial History
This decision is not just a formality, but a recognition of rich heritage. Córdoba’s jewellery tradition dates back to the 10th century, during the Caliphate of Córdoba, when local craftsmen were renowned for their filigree metalworking techniques.
Today, Córdoba is home to the Parque Joyero de Córdoba—Europe’s largest specialized business complex for jewellers, housing hundreds of workshops, designers, and educational institutions.
Why is this important for the market?
The leadership of the EUIPO and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office emphasize that this event sets an important precedent. It proves that a unique local craft can transform into a powerful European economic asset. This will allow local artisans not only to preserve their heritage, but also to compete successfully in the market based on guaranteed quality, while giving buyers confidence that they are purchasing a genuine work of art rather than a cheap copy.
