BANANA INSTEAD OF GAME CONTROLLER
Written by: Hanna Fleisher

Any gamer knows that a game console and its peripherals are not cheapest in the world. And, the current reality is that companies are making their products cheaper and more accessible in an effort to increase the sales.

Thus, Sony continues its work in this direction.

On July 15, 2020, the gaming equipment manufacturer applied for US patent No. 16/929448, which was published on February 4, 2021 (US 20210031110 A).

“We want to enable the user to use an inexpensive, simple and non-electronic device as a gaming peripheral.”

Why has the application caused a stir?

Because Sony is trying to patent the idea of using any household object as a game controller. The controller can be anything (fruits, vegetables, dishes). Specifically, a banana. The main thing is that the object must be non-luminous. For example, a game console has multiple high definition cameras. They trace the object being used as a gamepad and analyze its movements in space, the actions of the user’s hands and fingers. Ultimately, touching certain areas will be considered as pressing certain keys.

At first glance, a patent application may seem eccentric and far from reality. However, an experienced game producer like Sony is most likely just protecting its idea at the very onset. And, it’s perfectly right. After all, a patent for an invention is valid for 20 years. Technologies are developing at seventy-mile strides and it is quite possible that in 10 years using a banana as a console controller will become a regular practice. This leaves Sony with enough time to profit from its monopoly.

The most important thing is to protect the idea itself!
