Chinese technology company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, has suspended the global launch of its new artificial intelligence–based video generation model, Seedance 2.0, following a series of disputes related to copyright infringement.
Reason for the Suspension
According to investigative reports, major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms have raised claims against ByteDance regarding the use of copyrighted characters in the training and operation of the AI model. In particular, Disney sent the company a cease-and-desist notice, accusing it of using characters from the Star Wars and Marvel franchises without authorization. It is also reported that some generated videos contained recognizable depictions of well-known characters, including cinematic figures, which intensified the legal pressure on the company.
What is Seedance 2.0
Seedance 2.0 is an artificial intelligence model for video creation capable of generating cinematic content based on text prompts and multimodal data (text, images, audio, and video).
The company positioned it as a tool for:
- the film industry
- advertising
- e-commerce
The model was expected to significantly reduce the costs of video content production.
Decision to Suspend the Launch
ByteDance had planned a global release of the model in mid-March 2026; however, following a wave of legal claims, these plans have been put on hold.
Legal Context
This situation is part of a broader trend in the field of AI and intellectual property. Hollywood studios and rights holders are increasingly responding to:
- the use of protected characters in generative models
- training AI on unlicensed data
- the creation of derivative content without authorization
Market Implications
Experts note that this case may set a precedent for the entire generative video industry:
- AI companies will be forced to reconsider their approaches to training data
- content licensing will become a key factor in model development
- the risk of litigation may slow down commercial releases
Conclusion
The situation involving ByteDance demonstrates that the development of generative video AI is increasingly dependent not only on technology but also on a complex legal framework. Copyright conflicts are becoming one of the key factors that may determine the pace of development of the entire industry.
